In celebration of World Emoji Day, Google has announced it is completely open-sourcing its 3D emoji collection. The company shared insights into the complex design process required to adapt familiar pictograms into the third dimension, moving beyond simple 2D illustrations.

Designing in Three Dimensions

The shift to 3D modeling introduced unique challenges that do not exist in traditional illustration. Google’s design team had to determine the physical nature of these icons—questioning whether a smiley face should be rendered as a sphere, a mask, or a flat disc within a virtual environment.

Community Access and Raw Files

Google is handing over raw .OBJ files to the public, enabling developers and creators to integrate them into immersive VR worlds, indie applications, and internet memes. While the move encourages creative freedom, the Noto Emoji 3D set has faced a polarized reception since its initial debut in May, with some users expressing hesitation regarding the new aesthetic.
