Waze is undergoing a significant transformation as Google integrates its flagship AI assistant, Gemini, into the driving app. The goal of this update is to enhance trip personalization through four key new features, two of which leverage Gemini's conversational capabilities.
Conversational Reporting and Search
The core of the AI update lies in the conversational reporting feature. Drivers can now use natural voice commands to report traffic incidents and suggest map updates, such as road closures or outdated addresses, without manual input. Additionally, Waze has introduced 'Destination Search,' allowing users to find specific locations through conversational queries, such as searching for a coffee shop that is currently open or a nearby gas station with the lowest prices.
Non-AI Enhancements and Personalization
Beyond Gemini, Waze is introducing several practical updates focused on the driving experience:
- 'Less Chatty' Mode: This feature allows drivers to reduce the frequency of voice prompts, ensuring that music or podcasts are not constantly interrupted by navigation instructions.
- Motorcycle Mode: A dedicated mode for two-wheeled vehicles that incorporates shortcuts specific to motorcycles and provides more accurate ETAs.
- Personalized Routing: Waze will now suggest routes based on a user’s past trips and local traffic data. For instance, if a driver consistently prefers highways over local roads, the app will prioritize those options.
While Google Maps has already seen an influx of AI features, these updates signal Google's intent to exert greater control and modern capabilities over Waze, which has traditionally been a more community-focused tool.
