In an unprecedented move of collective action, approximately five thousand Google employees have submitted a formal petition to CEO Sundar Pichai, demanding stronger guarantees for job security. Coordinated by the Alphabet Workers Union, the initiative arrives as the tech giant redirects massive capital toward artificial intelligence while simultaneously trimming its workforce.
Financial Prosperity vs. Worker Stability
Parul Koul, software engineer and president of the union, highlighted that Google’s market value has quadrupled over the last six years, reaching $4 trillion. According to Koul, layoffs are not "difficult decisions" but rather a choice to prioritize profits over the people who keep the company running. During the delivery of the letter at the California headquarters, workers reportedly encountered closed doors, eventually leaving the document with a staff member from Pichai’s office.
Key Demands for Protection
The petition, which gathered over 4,500 signatures, outlines specific requirements to safeguard staff:
- Guaranteed severance packages.
- Voluntary departure programs prior to any mandatory layoffs.
- The option to receive severance as extended paid leave.
- Abolishment of the current performance review system, which workers claim relies on quotas rather than actual merit.
The Broader Silicon Valley Context
Worker anxiety is fueled by industry-wide shifts. While Alphabet CFO Anat Ashkenazi recently labeled AI a "key investment area," Google Cloud has quietly conducted layoffs in recent months. Meanwhile, dozens of Meta employees have filed a lawsuit alleging that AI tools were used to select workers for termination, purportedly targeting those on maternity leave or with disabilities—claims Meta has dismissed as baseless.
"This is the largest collective worker intervention Google has ever received regarding job security," stated Koul.
