In an unexpected turn of events during a talk at OpenAI’s offices, acclaimed author Dave Eggers used an invitation from Sam Altman to deliver a sharp rebuke to the company’s staff. Despite Eggers' reputation as a prolific creator and founder of educational nonprofits, he bypassed professional advice to focus on the societal costs of ChatGPT.

A Catastrophic Impact on Educators

According to the Financial Times, Eggers addressed approximately 200 OpenAI employees, stating that the technology's effect on teachers’ lives has been "catastrophic." He asserted that, regardless of the company's intent, they have made the work of educators "infinitely more difficult" than it was just two years ago.

The Loss of Individual Voice

Eggers highlighted the use of AI by students for composition as the "biggest tragedy of all." He warned that if students rely on these tools to write, they forfeit the opportunity to develop their own narrative skills. Key concerns raised include:

  • Students will never truly learn the craft of writing.
  • Their unique voices are effectively "stolen" from them.
  • The ability to tell one's own story and truth is being eroded.

The author concluded that this trend is "silencing an entire generation or two." Eggers, whose novel The Circle serves as a critique of the tech industry, has previously dismissed AI-generated writing as "pastiche nonsense."
