Renowned economist Nouriel Roubini, famously dubbed “Dr. Doom” for his stark financial warnings, now argues that the AI revolution is steering humanity toward universal basic income (UBI) or a form of “socialism.” Despite the radical nature of his claims, he insists this outlook is actually optimistic.

The Displacement of Human Labor

In a recent interview with Bloomberg TV, Roubini suggested that traditional fixes for social security, such as raising the retirement age, will prove insufficient. He forecasts that a significant portion of the workforce will be replaced by AI and robotics within the next 20 to 25 years. “Eventually, we need some form of universal basic income for everybody while they work and once they retire,” Roubini stated, noting that the transition is already underway.

UBI vs. Socialism

Roubini outlines two primary paths for redistributing the wealth generated by Artificial General Intelligence (AGI):

  • Ex-post distribution (UBI): The government taxes the “winners” of the AI era and redistributes the funds to the general population.
  • Ex-ante distribution (Socialism): The government takes direct ownership stakes in major tech firms.

“Essentially, the government is going to take over some fraction of the big tech firms,” Roubini explained. He pointed to reports that OpenAI has discussed granting a 5% stake to the public as a way to share the upside of AI development.

Economic Acceleration and Optional Work

The economist believes AGI will trigger unprecedented growth, with global GDP potentially accelerating to 6% by 2040 and 10% by 2050. This vision mirrors predictions by Elon Musk, who suggests that within two decades, labor will become optional. Musk compared future employment to gardening: one might choose to grow their own vegetables as a hobby, but it will no longer be a necessity for survival.
