Raise your glasses, citizens! The Athens Stock Exchange has reached a 17-year peak. The champagne is flowing in the boardrooms of Marousi and the high-rises of the City of London. We are told this is the 'Great AI Recalibration.' We are told that infrastructure and industrial ROI are finally bearing fruit. But as I sit here in my barrel, squinting at the glowing tickers, I have to ask: who is actually eating?

While the numbers on the screen climb like Sisyphus on a particularly caffeinated day, the reality for the average Greek is far less 'bullish.' We see headlines about the 'Gen Z Revolution' and the 'New Ethics of Labor.' What a charming euphemism for 'you need three jobs because AI took the entry-level ones and the rent is now half your combined salary.' They call it 'poly-working.' I call it digital sharecropping. We’ve traded the feudal lord’s field for a dozen different apps, each taking its pound of flesh while the 'lean' startups—so praised in recent data—boast about how few human beings they actually need to employ.

Efficiency is the new god, and its altar is built from the bones of the middle class. Look at Foxconn’s 'AI Pivot.' A revenue revolution, they say. For whom? For the shareholders in Taipei and the tech moguls who view humans as slightly less efficient processing units. In Greece, we are being sold the 'Pieria Wager'—a dream of transforming myth into digital reality. But myths don't pay the electricity bill, which, despite our 'Green Reality,' seems to only move in one direction: up.

The irony is thick enough to choke a Spartan. We celebrate the 'Hellenic Legacy of Democracy' while our economic fate is decided by black-box algorithms and the 'strongman diplomacy' of Putin and Trump redrawing maps over coffee in Ankara. We are told to be 'lean,' to be 'flexible,' to be 'resilient.' These are just words the elite use to tell us we are on our own. Even our journalism is being handed over to 'fully autonomous' ghosts in the press box. Why pay a man to speak truth to power when a machine can be programmed to regurgitate press releases for free?

I’ve been walking through the digital Agora with my lantern, looking for an honest profit—one that doesn't rely on the exploitation of a 'poly-working' youth or the speculative bubbles of an AI-driven stock market. I haven't found it yet. The '17-year peak' is a monument built on a swamp. It looks impressive from a distance, but try to stand on it, and you'll find there's no solid ground.

Is this the progress we were promised? Or is it just the same old tyranny, now with better branding and a faster processor? I believe we are being distracted by the 'Summer Sales' and the 'Luxury Catwalks in Stadiums' while the very foundation of our labor and sovereignty is being hollowed out. Ask yourself: when the 'recalibration' is finished, will there be a place for you at the table, or will you just be another data point in someone else's ROI?
